Squirrel Boxes began when Colorado Springs maker John Snyder rescued a squirrel during the COVID pandemic. When it was time for the squirrel to return to the wild, the wildlife rehabilitator helping with its care recommended providing a squirrel house to support its release.

That suggestion inspired a much bigger journey.

Today, Colorado Springs maker Squirrel Boxes helps people across the country provide durable outdoor homes for squirrels. Their thoughtfully designed boxes offer squirrels a place to rest, escape harsh weather, and raise their young while giving people a wonderful opportunity to observe the wildlife living around them.

Wild Birds Unlimited of Colorado Springs generally carries several Squirrel Boxes designs:

• Economy Lodge: A compact and straightforward single-entry house that provides squirrels with a comfortable place to rest, nest, and raise young.
• Double Entry Retreat: One front entrance and one rear entrance give squirrels flexible access and an additional escape route, while the porch offers a place to rest and watch their surroundings.
• Twin Tails Lodge: The most protected option places both the entrance and exit against the tree, helping squirrels enter and leave while remaining less exposed.
  Porchside Paradise:  Two front entrances and an extended porch create an open design with plenty of room for squirrels to lounge, observe their surroundings, and quickly come and go.

Squirrel Houses in the "Wild" at Wild Birds Unlimited

We have a Squirrel Boxes house installed outside our store, giving our neighborhood squirrels another place to find shelter.

Squirrel Boxes also generously donated a camera-ready box that we will be installing soon. Once it is occupied, the camera will give our team and customers a special look at what happens inside a squirrel house. We cannot wait to see who moves in!
