Our Values: Birds, Conservation, and Community

Wild Birds Unlimited of Colorado Springs is more than a place to purchase bird-feeding supplies. We are a locally owned store committed to helping people connect with nature while supporting the wildlife, organizations, artists, educators, and families that make our community special.

Every purchase made at our store helps us contribute to conservation projects, provide resources for local nonprofits, support community events, reduce waste, and share the joy of nature with the next generation.

Conservation Begins in Our Own Backyard

We believe meaningful conservation is built from many everyday actions. That includes helping customers create healthier backyard habitats, supporting organizations protecting birds and other wildlife, and reducing waste within our own business.

Our team works to reuse, repurpose, recycle, or compost as much as possible:

Newspapers brought to our store are donated to The Gabriel Foundation, a parrot rescue in Elizabeth, Colorado.
Empty bird-seed bags are collected and recycled into composite lumber.
Shipping boxes and packing materials we receive shipments in are reused for online orders and customer purchases.
Wood wool from birdbath packaging is donated for use in animal enclosures at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and Pueblo Zoo. When the zoos have enough, it may also be passed along to local farmers.
Materials we cannot reuse are recycled whenever possible.
Our staff even composts food scraps in the break room.

These may seem like small steps, but their impact grows when our customers and community participate with us.

We are also especially proud to provide bird-feeding and nesting resources where they can support education, research, wellness, and meaningful connections with nature.

Our contributions have included:

A feeder outside a window may look like a simple thing, but it can provide comfort, curiosity, learning, and a daily connection with the natural world.

Supporting Conservation Organizations

We are proud to support and collaborate with organizations working for birds, wildlife, habitat, accessibility, education, and our wider community, including:

Our team members also contribute personally through board service, advocacy, educational programs, conservation work, and participation in local environmental groups.

Events Your Support Helps Make Possible

Community events bring people together to learn about wildlife, explore the outdoors, and support conservation. Customer purchases help us sponsor events such as:

Helping Children Discover Nature

Children are naturally curious about birds, bugs, animals, and the outdoors. We want to nurture that curiosity.

Our children’s events offer families fun, approachable ways to learn about nature together. Through crafts, activities, presentations, and wildlife encounters, we help young people discover that conservation can begin right outside their own homes.

We also support educators with donated feeders and bird food that can turn schoolyards and classroom windows into opportunities for observation and discovery.

Celebrating Local Artists and Makers

Colorado Springs is home to an extraordinary creative community. We proudly feature work from local artists, craftspeople, conservation advocates, and small businesses throughout our store.

Our local collection includes original artwork, jewelry, glass art, woodwork, wildlife carvings, stickers, prints, fiber art, pet products, squirrel houses, and many other handmade creations.

Purchasing locally made work supports a neighbor, keeps more money within our community, and gives customers the opportunity to take home something with a genuine connection to Colorado.

Meet the local artists and makers featured in our store in the Local Makers section of our site.

Thoughtful and Responsible Sourcing

We consider more than function when selecting products for our store. Whenever possible, we prioritize products made in the United States or Canada, where manufacturing practices and materials can be more easily verified.

When domestic options are unavailable, we look for responsibly produced and Fair Trade products whenever possible. We also value products that are durable, repairable, wildlife-safe, and designed to last. A product that remains useful for years creates less waste than one that must be repeatedly replaced.

Thank You for Making This Work Possible

When you shop at Wild Birds Unlimited of Colorado Springs, your support reaches far beyond our store. It helps fund conservation, supports local makers, strengthens community organizations, introduces children to nature, provides wildlife with safer habitat, and allows us to reduce and repurpose waste.

We are deeply grateful to every customer, Daily Savings Club member, volunteer, partner, educator, artist, and community organization that participates in this work.

Conservation happens in many little ways. Together, those little actions can become something remarkable.
